SELECTED BFL HISTORICAL NOTES:
|
- While historical records are somewhat sketchy, some indications are that the first BFL game was played in the fall of 1971. (Better yet, saying that the BFL started in 1971 is great since it allows us to celebrate 40 years this fall whether it is true or not.)
- The BFL's Hudgens Field has hosted football games each and every fall since it's opening in 1971.
- It is a little known fact that in the early 1970's Hudgens Field had a regulation goal post built by BFL Founder Jasper Bailey. The goal post was made of wood and painted white. Unfortunately, after several years of exposure to weather, the goal post was deemed unsafe and Hudgens Field groundskeepers had to tear it down. Rumor has it that the goal post suffered a fatal injury when a young not-to-be-named future groundskeeper ran into it with the family car. It is unclear whether a successful field goal attempt was made during any BFL regular season game.
- In-game consumption of honey-suckle juice was outlawed on the sidelines in the mid-1970's. The fence row, hedges and honey-suckle vines that supplied the western sidelines for Hudgens Field were promptly removed. The removed hedges were shipped south to the University of Georgia and the rest is history.
- Concussions and brain injuries were severely reduced in 1982 when the famed 'tree play' tree at the 10 yard line in the southwest corner of the field was cut down. As a result, offensive pass play production in 1982 lagged as offensive coordinators struggled to adapt and find new ways to score in the Hudgens Field south red zone.
- Since 1971, offenses driving into the north bound red zone have produced an average of 107.5 more yards per game in total offense as compared to those driving south bound on Hudgens Field.
- Due to the USA Oil Crisis in the mid-70's, Hudgens Field was in danger of being plowed under and converted into corn producing farmland. Thankfully, the election of Ronald Reagan saved Hudgens Field and paved the way for BFL seasons into the 1980's and beyond. Thanks Gipper!
- Through the years, the most prominent set of rules have included: 1) two-hand touch, 2) four downs to score...no first downs, 3) one blitz per four downs plus three Mississippi rush count on other downs, 4) QB can run if rushed, 5) fumbles are live, and 6) two feet in-bounds are required for a completed reception.
